This is basically just that movie Nobody that Bob Odenkirk already did, except this time it takes place in a town literally called "Normal."

Directed by Ben Wheatley, Normal (2025) is an action thriller that attempts to capture lightning in a bottle twice. The script was written by Odenkirk alongside Derek Kolstad, the writer behind Nobody and the John Wick franchise. Because of that heavy creative overlap, the entire film feels incredibly derivative.

Odenkirk stars as Ulysses Richardson, an interim sheriff who takes a temporary job in the snowy, quaint town of Normal, Minnesota. Following a botched bank robbery, a dark secret is exposed, the entire town turns against him, and the Yakuza randomly show up to shoot at him. The cast is stacked with talent, including Lena Headey and Henry Winkler, who plays the town's mayor. However, despite the star power, there is absolutely nothing special about this in terms of the story. It relies entirely on every small-town conspiracy cliché in the book.

I will give credit where credit is due: the action was good. The filmmakers utilized a lot of impressive practical effects during the chaotic shootouts, which kept the violence grounded and visceral. I also genuinely enjoyed the comedy breaks. Having Odenkirk and Winkler on screen together naturally provides some fantastic comedic timing that helps break up the bloodshed.

But overall, the film leaves zero lasting impact. It is completely wafer-thin. I will forget this movie by tomorrow morning, and I will absolutely never rewatch it.
